Mayor Wynne teaching TM in Armenia
March 13, 2012
Bob Wynne, the Mayor of Maharishi Vedic City in Iowa, US, is currently in Armenia. In an interview to the local news portal Lragir.am, Wynne explained that it was not his first stay in the small mountainous country.
“My wife and I were here 23 years ago, in 1990, after the earthquake. And we had been here for 4.5 months to teach the techniques of Transcendental Meditation, and the results were powerful. One learns Transcendental Meditation for personal benefits: state of mind, state of health. If one of the family is happy, the rest of the family is happy. Even a small fraction of a population practicing this advanced form of meditation can have a positive influence on the whole country.”
Wynne stressed that although TM practice will have wider implications for the whole society, he is not on some kind of a political mission. “We are not a political organization, what we do is to say here is a technique, if you do it individually, your life will get better. I am the mayor of the city where everybody has been practicing Transcendental Meditation for 12 years. Nobody violates the rules, so if the society has no problems, it is easier for the government to rule, and the governments will begin to function like the nature.”
Armenia being a devoutly conservative Christian country, Wynne was also asked about possible objections to Transcendental Meditation from the Armenian Apostolic Church. He replied that people of different religions practice the technique – it enhances rather than undermines their religious affiliation.
BOB WYNNE: We are around the world, in almost every country, and usually we have non-profit organizations created in those countries. We want to let people know that TM exists. When we arrived in Armenia, it was a part of the Soviet Union. There were five people who knew about TM, when we left, 17,000 people in Armenia across different ministries knew that.
BOB WYNNE: We don’t know that. It is not necessary to have 17,000 now, we need only 250 people to learn and practice it for one hour every day. It can be at organizations, ministries or other places.
BOB WYNNE: Here is the thing, we can start with the president but the president is also a reflection of the collective consciousness of the people. So, if people are coherent, than it is easier for the government to function. We are not a political organization, what we do is to say here is a technique, if you do it individually, your life will get better. I am the mayor of the city where everybody has been practicing TM for 12 years. Nobody violates the rules, so if the society has no problems, it is easier for the government to rule, and the governments will begin to function like the nature.
BOB WYNNE: It is not a religion, it is not a philosophy, it is a technique and people of different religions practice this technique. In general, people who learn TM learn that it enhances their appreciation of their religion.
